Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration

Important: Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices are set to expire starting in June 2026. This might affect the ability of certain personal and business devices to boot securely if not updated in time. To avoid disruption, we recommend reviewing the guidance and taking action to update certificates in advance. For details and preparation steps, see Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration and CA updates.

Known issues in this update

Symptom

After installing the February (KB5077212) or March (KB5079420) Hotpatch security updates, some devices might experience failures when performing a Push Button Reset (Reset this PC) when using the "Keep my files" or "Remove everything" options.

After the first phase of the offline reset, users see a black boot screen. The reset doesn't complete as expected. Instead, the device restarts to the desktop and displays the following error message: “There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made.”

This issue affects Windows Autopatch–managed commercial devices that meet all the following conditions:

  • The organization manages the device with Windows Autopatch.

  • Hotpatch is enabled to apply security updates.

  • Monthly security updates are installed without restarting the device.

This issue does not affect retail consumer devices, devices that do not use Hotpatch, or devices that are not managed with Windows Autopatch.

Workaround

IT administrators can mitigate this issue on managed devices by installing the March Safe OS Dynamic Update (KB5079471). This update includes a fix for the issue and only needs to be applied once.

Microsoft is working to resolve this issue and will provide information when it’s available.
